Baybayin is the ancient writing system of the Philippines. It's name means "to spell", and it also commonly called "Alibata" incorrectly. The name Alibata comes from Professor Paul Versoza. Versoza thought the writing system originated from Arabia. The first characters in the Arabic alphabet "Alif-Ba-Ta," but he dropped the F to make the word sound smoother. Below is the alphabet.

Baybayin was first discovered in the Doctrina Cristiana, which came from 1593. That was also the same place Tagalog was found. It was often written on natural material like bamboo as well as pots, and written with small pieces of iron.

In Baybayin, the words were not seperated by a space, they were written continously. The only type of punctuation was one or two verticle lines | or ||. The lines stood for any modern punctuation like a period or comma. It is a syllabic writing system.
